How Long Should Driving Lessons Be?

BOOK NOW

Your Essential Guide

Before you start learning to drive, you might find yourself wondering: ‘how long are driving lessons?’. It’s not a silly thing to ask, as learning to drive can vary so much from person to person! As the provider of driving lessons Colchester learners recommend, we are here to give you all the information you need. So, how long is a driving lesson, and which length is the right fit for you? Here’s everything you need to know.

1 Hour Driving Lessons

One-hour lessons are a great choice for learners who want to make faster progress or are approaching their test. They are much easier to fit in around work or school, and can be really convenient for those with tight schedules. If you’re just starting out and want to ease into driving gradually, they can be much less taxing, especially if you find concentrating for long periods mentally exhausting. They’re a great length for general learning, giving you enough time to get to grips with basic driving.

2 Hour Driving Lessons

Two-hour lessons are the most common, and they are chosen by the majority of our learners. With double the time, you can tackle longer routes and cover a larger number of topics in much greater detail. They are also ideal for those who are based further from a town centre or test centre, as you will have enough time to get there and become familiar with the roads and potential test routes.

What’s the Best Option for You?

There’s no strict rule on how long your lessons should be. Some of our learners prefer to start with 1-hour sessions and then switch to 2-hour lessons once they gain confidence, while others find they benefit from 2-hour lessons right from the start. Others may only make the change to 2-hour lessons as they get closer to their test, while some may never take them at all. Every learner is different, and our instructors are flexible and happy to work with you to find the right lesson length for you.

To help you make your choice, it could be handy to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I learn better in short bursts?
  • Do I need more time to settle in at the start of each lesson?
  • How much time can I spare for my driving lessons?
  • Am I able to stay focused for 2 hours?
  • Am I looking to pass my test as soon as possible?

How Many Hours Driving Lessons Do I Need?

We’re often asked how many hours of lessons are needed to pass a driving test. According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), it will take an average learner 45 hours of lessons to pass their test, alongside 22 hours of practising. There’s no hard and fast rule, though! Some learners require more lessons, while others do not need many. The most important thing is to learn at a pace that is right for you, and to only take your test when you and your instructor agree that you are ready.

Testimonials

I was taught by Geoff for about 2 months and I went to my test and passed the first time with this company and I would highly recommend Geoff and the company ad he teaches really well, he ensures that you end up being a driver and not a learner and i felt that is a really respectable quality when it comes to a teacher. I could not say any bad experience and was extremely happy

For any one wanting to learn to drive but not sure who to go with I definitely recommend Nayland, with his great help I passed first time and in just over three months, the lessons were great I always looked forward to them as Michael is a lovely guy and very down to earth, and up for a laugh 🙂 but he is also very patient for any one who is nervous about driving. 🙂

Harriet Osborn Davies

I passed my test first time, I didn’t need to use any other instructor as Michael gave me all the advice I needed, down to earth, practical and easy to understand. While learning to drive can be stressful, Micheal made it so easy for me. I enjoyed learning and looked forward to the lessons as they were really enjoyable, if you want to learn to drive with someone that will make it enjoyable and practical Micheal is the guy! guy.

Before having Michael as a driving instructor I was with someone else! I was given his number through a recommendation, and his lessons gave me the confidence to pass my test! Michael has great prices and deals, to suit anyone! I have now been driving a year, and I have recommended many people to go with him and they have gone on to pass very fast! 🙂

Amy Cowlin
