How to Handle Roundabouts With Confidence

BOOK NOW

Roundabouts are one of the most daunting parts of learning to drive. There are exits to count, traffic already moving and decisions to make on the spot, so it’s understandable that learners and nervous drivers feel unsure. With good observation, preparation and regular practice, though, roundabouts become far more manageable.

How to Approach a Roundabout

As you approach, look ahead for road signs, lane arrows and other road markings. They show you which exit you need and help you choose the correct lane. Slow down early so you have time to assess the traffic and make a safe decision.

Unless signs, road markings or traffic lights tell you otherwise, give priority to traffic coming from your right. Check for vehicles already on the roundabout and wait for a safe gap before joining. Never assume another driver will follow the expected route. Drivers sometimes signal late, signal wrongly or don’t signal at all, so watch what the vehicle is actually doing, not just its indicator.

Choosing the Correct Lane

The lane you need depends on the exit you’re taking, and layouts vary from one roundabout to the next. Always follow the signs and road markings first, and use the general rules only where there’s nothing to tell you otherwise.

As a general guide, the Highway Code says:

  • Turning left (first exit): signal left, approach in the left-hand lane and keep to the left on the roundabout, signalling left until you leave.
  • Going straight ahead: choose the correct lane on approach (usually the left), don’t signal as you approach, and signal left once you’ve passed the exit before yours.
  • Turning right or going full circle: signal right, approach in the right-hand lane and keep to the right until you need to move over to exit, then signal left after passing the exit before yours.

Larger and multi-lane roundabouts often have their own lane markings, including spiral layouts that guide you towards your exit. On these, follow the paint on the road rather than your instinct.

Observation, Speed and Signalling

Good observation is essential on roundabouts. Check your mirrors before you change speed or position, and look right as you approach. Watch for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians crossing the entry and exit roads, and remember that cyclists and horse riders may stay in the left lane even when they’re going all the way round.

Approach at a speed that lets you stop if you need to. Once you’re on the roundabout, hold your position in lane and look towards your exit.

Use your indicators clearly and at the right moment so other road users know where you’re going. A signal given too early can be just as misleading as one given too late.

What If You Feel Nervous or Miss Your Exit?

If you hesitate, the most important thing is to stay calm and wait for a safe gap. Never pull out just because someone behind you is impatient. They can wait.

If you miss your exit, don’t swerve or brake suddenly. Go round again if it’s safe, or take the next exit and find another route. Even on your driving test, a missed exit handled safely is far better than a rushed late move.

Roundabouts in Colchester

Colchester gives learners plenty of roundabout practice. The Greenstead Roundabout is a “magic roundabout”, with a ring of mini-roundabouts around a central island, and the North Station roundabout has a local reputation for catching drivers out. Practising roundabouts like these with an instructor, before you meet them on your own or on test day, takes away much of the fear.

Building Confidence Through Practice

Confidence grows with experience, not by forcing yourself onto the busiest roundabouts in town. A qualified instructor can take you through different layouts, explain lane choices as you go and bring you back to the ones you find hardest.

Our driving lessons in Colchester give you structured practice on local roads, including the roundabouts that worry learners most, at a pace that suits you. Call Nayland Driving School on 0800 211 8717 or book online to get started.

Testimonials

I was taught by Geoff for about 2 months and I went to my test and passed the first time with this company and I would highly recommend Geoff and the company ad he teaches really well, he ensures that you end up being a driver and not a learner and i felt that is a really respectable quality when it comes to a teacher. I could not say any bad experience and was extremely happy
