How to Handle Roundabouts Safely and Confidently

BOOK NOW

Roundabouts can be daunting when you’re learning to drive, especially when there are several lanes of traffic around you and decisions to make quickly. If you worry about which lane to choose, when to signal or whether you have time to pull out, you’re not alone. Roundabouts get much easier with practice, and once you understand the basic rules and build good observation habits, you’ll handle them with far more confidence.

Prepare Before You Reach the Roundabout

Start preparing before you reach the roundabout: check your mirrors, read the traffic and slow down gradually. Look ahead for direction signs, lane markings and anything that points to your exit. Road markings and layouts vary, so never assume every roundabout follows the same pattern. Give yourself time to pick the correct lane rather than making a last-minute manoeuvre.

Give way to traffic approaching from the right unless signs, road markings or traffic lights indicate otherwise. Look carefully for a suitable gap, and remember that another driver’s signal doesn’t guarantee they’ll take the exit you’re expecting.

Choosing the Correct Lane and When to Signal

Your exit generally decides your lane and signalling, but always follow the signs and markings at the roundabout in front of you.

  • Turning left: approach in the left-hand lane and signal left before you enter. Keep to the left on the roundabout and keep signalling left until you leave.
  • Going straight ahead: unless signs or markings say otherwise, approach without signalling, in the lane the road layout shows. Signal left after passing the exit before yours, then leave when it’s safe.
  • Turning right: approach in the right-hand lane and signal right. Keep to the right as you go round, checking your mirrors, until you need to move over. Signal left after passing the exit before yours.

Handling Larger and Multi-Lane Roundabouts

Larger roundabouts can feel more complicated because traffic is entering and circulating in several lanes. Look well ahead, read the signs early and know your route before you join. Stay within your lane and never cut across the lane markings to reach an exit at the last moment.

Always check your mirrors before changing position, and make sure it’s safe before moving across a lane. If you can’t move into the correct position safely, don’t force your way across traffic. Observation matters most as you leave the roundabout. Watch for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians near the exits, where they can be harder to see, and remember that cyclists and horse riders may stay in the left lane even when they’re going all the way round.

What If You Feel Nervous or Miss Your Exit?

Busy roundabouts make even experienced drivers cautious, so feeling nervous is normal. If you hesitate, take a moment to assess the situation rather than rushing into a gap that doesn’t feel safe.

If you miss your exit, carry on around the roundabout if it’s safe and permitted, then take another suitable route. Never cut across lanes or brake suddenly to avoid missing a turn. Other drivers may signal incorrectly, change speed unexpectedly or pull out when you think they should wait. Leave plenty of space, stay alert and put safety ahead of keeping up with traffic.

Practising on Colchester’s Roundabouts

Colchester’s roads are a good training ground for larger layouts. Several of the town’s busiest junctions are multi-lane roundabouts, including where the A12 meets the main roads into town, so lane discipline matters from the moment you approach.

The Greenstead Roundabout works differently again, with traffic moving through a series of smaller roundabouts rather than one large circle. Your instructor can take you through these at quieter times first, then build up to busier periods once you know the layout.

Build Confidence With Professional Driving Lessons

Confidence grows with experience, and practising with a qualified instructor lets you tackle roundabouts at your own pace. An experienced instructor can explain lane choice, observation and signalling, then help you put those skills into practice in real traffic.

If you’re learning in Colchester, our driving lessons in Colchester will help you get to know the local roads and build safe driving habits.

If roundabouts are making you anxious, call Nayland Driving School on 0800 211 8717. We’ll talk through your lessons and how the right guidance can help you become a safe, confident driver.

Testimonials

I was taught by Geoff for about 2 months and I went to my test and passed the first time with this company and I would highly recommend Geoff and the company ad he teaches really well, he ensures that you end up being a driver and not a learner and i felt that is a really respectable quality when it comes to a teacher. I could not say any bad experience and was extremely happy
