As one of the providers of driving lessons Ipswich learner drivers trust, we know what goes into getting someone ready for the road. One of the most important parts of learning to drive is taking a mock practical driving test. Here’s what you can expect from yours.
When will you take a mock test
During your driving lessons, you will gain the practical skills and knowledge you need to pass your driving test. How long this takes can vary from driver to driver, but you will come to a point where you instructor can see that you are ready for your test. At this stage in your tuition, they will then turn their focus to helping you feel as prepared as possible for your practical test, which you are able to take after the successful completion of your theory.
What is a mock driving test?
One of the key parts of preparing you for your driving test is a mock driving test. Just like mock exams, a mock driving test is there to prepare you for the real thing in a much lower-stakes setting. This will be something that you and your driving instructor will discuss beforehand, and you will know when your mock is going to be carried out – just like your real test. Some pupils will already have their practical driving test booked, while some prefer to wait until completing a mock to go ahead and do so.
What does it involve?
So, what’s involved in a mock driving test? Well, everything that you can expect from a genuine driving test, just without the official pass or fail at the end!
You will begin with an eyesight test, followed by those all-important ‘show me, tell me’ questions. You’ll then be taken out on the roads, during which your driving ability will be assessed. You’ll complete a section of independent driving, following a sat nav or road signs. You will also be asked to demonstrate that you can safely and correctly carry out one of four manoeuvres: forward bay park, reverse bay park, right reverse and parallel park. If your instructor thinks that you need the practice, they may ask you to complete all three. After all of this, you will given your mock result and feedback.
Why it’s a good idea
Why is taking a mock test a good idea? First of all, it will give you a good idea of what you can expect from your test? While there’s no guaranteeing what routes you will take, what questions you will be asked, or what manoeuvres to perform, you will become familiar with the layout of the test. Your driving instructor will also be able to identify areas in which you need to improve, so you will be able to work on those before you are asked to demonstrate those skills for real. You’ll also feel a little bit nervous, as you will go into your test feeling as prepared as possible.
